🌵📚What an incredible weekend at the Tucson Festival of Books! I had the privilege of attending some fantastic panel discussions and connecting with remarkable Indigenous authors.

One of the highlights was the panel on the National Book Awards: Realities of Writing, featuring 2024 National Book Award honorees Jason De León, Octavio Quintanilla, and Ernest Scheyder, moderated by Ruth Dickey, Executive Director of the National Book Foundation. The insights shared were truly inspiring!

I also participated in the panel on Indigenous Voices and Stories of Resilience alongside Dawn Quigly and Ginger Reno. We discussed the importance of storytelling for Ojibwe, Cherokee, and Cree children, focusing on themes of resilience, family, and culture amidst trauma.

On Day 2, I joined authors John Schu and Kim Tomsic for a panel on Writing a Middle Grade Novel. ✨ It’s finally here! This weekend marks the Tucson Festival of Books, a celebration of literature that holds a special place in my heart. For years, my family and I would come down to admire the new stories, illustrations, and authors showcased throughout the festival.

Now, it feels surreal to participate as a published author and join in on the panels. I’m truly looking forward to this experience!

The festival features a variety of author panels and workshops, along with hundreds of local and national exhibitors. Attendees can meet their favorite authors, purchase books and merchandise, and learn about local nonprofits. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with the literary community. These awards celebrate the best writing and illustrations by Natives, showcasing their humanity in rich, diverse narratives. This year’s winners include:

- Picture Books: “Forever Cousins” by Laurel Goodluck, illustrated by Jonathan Nelson, and “A Letter for Bob” by Kim Rogers, illustrated by Jonathan Nelson.

These awards celebrate the best writing and illustrations by Natives, showcasing their humanity in rich, diverse narratives. This year’s winners include:

- Picture Books: “Forever Cousins” by Laurel Goodluck, illustrated by Jonathan Nelson, and “A Letter for Bob” by Kim Rogers, illustrated by Jonathan Nelson.
- Middle Grade Book: “We Still Belong” by Christine Day, cover art by Madelyn Goodnight.
- Young Adult Book: “Rez Ball” by Byron Graves, jacket art by Natasha Donovan.
